Welcome to Xela

Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, or Xela, as it is popularly known, is the country's second largest city, with a population of about 300,000. Xela sits in a mountain valley at an elevation of 7,655 ft (2,333 m) so the air can get quite chilly, despite its proximity to the equator.

Weather is usually pleasant in Xela during the day, with highs averaging 74° in April, and 59° in December. Nightime lows are usually in the 50s and 60s. Rainy season, which means a few afternoon showers per week, runs from May to November, and dry season from December to April

Of course, a little rain doesnt stop Guatemala's central highland cultural capital from doing its thing. Xela has a ton of worthwhile attractions on offer, including great nightlife, tons of local and international restaurants, cafes serving native highland coffees, museums, a mall, movie theaters, fitness clubs, yoga classes, universities,
internet cafes, a zoo, and even a professional soccer team (Go Xelaju!)

Thats not to say, however, that Xela is running at the full speed pace of a modern city, either, but thats what we like about it. The city of Xela was founded some 300 years before the Spanish conquistadors arrived, and remains a capital of the Mayan world. Over 60% of the residents of the department of Quetzaltenango are Mayan, so you will see plenty of traditionaly dressed men and woman, and get to observe another way of life.

Xela is a perfectly authentic place to live and learn, submerse yourself in the Spanish language, and observe a different culture - with just enough student population to provide the comforts and services you might desire.
